Jon Kitna, The Insurance Policy

With Tony Romo’s back injury (herniated disc, ouch), the Dallas Cowboys have signed on retired Quarterback Jon Kitna to replace Romo if he is unable to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. Kitna was signed as third Quarterback after Kyle Orton. Jon Kitna is a veteran Seattle Seahawk QB, who is now teaching math at Lincoln High (his high school!) in Tacoma, Washington and also serving as the school team’s football coach. For his week’s work in the NFL out of, Kitna is expected to earn $55,000 – not too shabby! It’s also cute to note that Kitna’s brief contract with the NFL will not disrupt his work at Lincoln High, as the Tacoma school district will be on break until January 2nd, 2014, so his students and coachees won’t miss him at all – if he doesn’t injure himself, that is.

If it were up to Tony Romo, though, he would play with his pain and injuries. Remember back in 2011, when he played despite breaking his ribs in Week 2 against San Fran? Romo was thickly padded and high on meds when he pulled the Cowboys through a 18-16 win against Washington. Fortunately (unfortunately!?), Tony’s doctor needs to clear the Quarterback this time around. As much as I’d love to see Romo play, I’d much rather see him recover and come back with his full shape and strength for the rest of the season.

Many fans have voiced their criticism and skepticism at the 2 replacement choices, claiming that neither Kyle Orton nor Jon Kitna will be able to see the Dallas Cowboys through a victory, especially for the case of Kitna who has been retired for 2 years already.
